[ AGE ] 17. I'M CALLING IT. With his birthday 8/26 B( Of course this is all headcanon and assuming I math'ed right...(see notes below)
[ TYPE ] Meister
[ WEAPONS ] The "Twin Demon Guns", the Thompson sisters, Liz and Patty.
[ HISTORY ]
If you want his full background, refer to the wiki, but "Operation: Capture Baba Yaga's Castle" on is based on the manga. Here's the real, and I mean really real, short version of it, with the Soul Campaign's premise included at the end.
Death the Kid is the only son and heir of Shinigami, or Lord Death, the ruling death god the oversees the souls of the dead and peace of the world. As such Kid was raised to be prepared for the day when he would take that role. He was sent to Brooklyn to detain the Thompson sisters, but instead of just taking them back to Shibusen, he asked them to be his weapons after discovering their symmetrical weapon forms. It was a rocky start due to the sisters' background, but eventually they learned to work together, the differences complementing each other rather than hindering. Originally Kid was not enrolled into Shibusen due to the fact that he already knew basically everything the classes had to offer. But after watching Maka, Soul, Black☆Star, and Tsubaki fight against Stein in their extra lesson, he decided to join to better understand and be among his peers. Since then he has participated in various missions, many of them involving the Demon Tools created by Eibon. This spurred him to try do his own investigation but yielded very little. He was also involved with the, what everyone thought, to be the final battle against Kishin Asura.
Anyway, segue over, we now come to Soul Campaign's premise. Set a year after the end of the anime (and with some tweaking), Kid's father, Shinigami, was found murdered. The only remains were his shattered mask and mirror. Because of this, Kid was forced to step up and take the position of Shinigami. In the beginning he tried to keep it a secret, donning the mask and cloak while out on official matters while still attending classes when he could.
But things would not be so simple. With Shinigami gone, the witches launched a full scale attack, and the war for the world began anew. Although they had defeated Asura, his death was not certain. Medusa had also been unaccounted for. With Medusa taking the reins and Asura's Madness wavelength growing, things were looking very dire, especially with the one being who had been best to combat it now dead.
Thus Kid made an inadvertent wish: Rescue Death City and stop the waves of Madness from overtaking the world. This somehow activated the Demon Tool "BREW," pulling people from different worlds, times, and universes into Death City. Now Kid not only had to deal with the war, but he also had to try and rectify the mistake he made.
[ PERSONALITY ]
I'm taking into account the premise of Soul Campaign for this section. I'm starting with how I interpret Kid in general, and then I'll fine tune it to the more recent events.
Symmetry. Probably the most defining characteristic about Kid is his OCD/OCPD tendencies over symmetry. It is also perhaps one of his greatest weaknesses on two fronts. If Kid is facing an opponent who is perfectly symmetrical, no matter how strong or evil it is, he cannot bring himself to destroy it. To Kid, symmetry is the representation of a perfect balance and order, and anything perfectly symmetrical is a thing of true beauty. Perfect symmetry can also distract him from any tasks at hand. He will have to stop and admire anything that's symmetrical.
On the other hand, if something is not symmetrical, he will completely fall apart and obsess over it. He just can't stand it. Period. He will become disgusted and/or freak out, depending on the situation. Because of his personality, if he does find something that is asymmetrical, he will need to fix it somehow. This will consume him to the point that a lot of times he will completely forget whatever he was doing—even if it's an important mission—and fix it. If he finds the asymmetry offensive or disgusting, he tends to lose his temper and blasts it away, seeing that there is no such need for such an abomination. So it's basically fix it or get rid of it.
However, if he cannot do either of those two—such as his hair—he will become depressed and call himself trash. Because he holds symmetry with such high value, the fact that he himself is asymmetrical distresses him to the point that it renders him useless. It usually takes a lot of comfort and support from Liz and Patty for him to snap out of it.
Kid is aware that most of the world is asymmetrical, and in truth, his bouts of symmetry tend to be random. There are times when he'll be just fine, and then there are times when he happens to notice something about an object's symmetry. But once Kid is fixated on the symmetry, it is very hard to get him back to focus. If the situation is grave and calls for his utmost attention, however, Kid can manage to control himself to focus on what is really more important. These are usually more for life or death situations, though he will still notice the asymmetry. In fact, he can use that as an excuse to get rid of it faster.
Perfectly Balanced. In relation to symmetry, but slightly different, Kid is also a perfectionist. As the son of Shinigami, and knowing of the great duties that would befall upon him as a successor, Kid holds balance and order as one of the most important things. In fact, his ideal world would be one where everything is in a perfect balance, and he hopes to one day realize this. He views the current world as flawed and unbalanced, in part because of all the evil that must be kept in check. Again tying with his obsession with symmetry and order, Kid will do everything as perfectly as possible, even if it means taking more time and getting distracted. His need to be balance is also reflected upon himself. It is the reason why he wields both Liz and Patty as his weapons, instead of using just one weapon. Because the two are twin pistols, he can keep his balance.
Efficient. Because of his need to be balanced, Kid is also very efficient in what he does. He doesn't take any unnecessary steps and will execute any task as perfectly as possible. Of course, this doesn't always happen because of his own flaws, but for the most part he at least desires efficiency and can be when his obsessions for order or symmetry don't get in the way. He will make sure to plan everything out beforehand—again so that everything is executed as flawlessly as possible—and will do the necessary research before going into a mission.
Dignified. Again, because he is the son of Shinigami, Kid holds himself out as expected of someone born in such an important status. While Kid can and sometimes use his position as a shinigami to his advantage, it's not out of abuse and usually more for practical matters. Liz and Patty also recognize Kid's soul as dignified (and also spoiled). He is polite, neat, proper, and relatively reserved. Under normal circumstances (that is anything that doesn't involve symmetry), Kid remains calm and reasonable. He will analyze the situation and work from there. He also appears much more mature for his age, ready to reprimand anyone or keep them in check if necessary. He holds a lot of responsibility both as his position as a shinigami and a meister, and he takes it all very seriously. He does not treat life lightly, as it is his duty to protect the innocent souls and maintain that balance. He also normally doesn't make light of his missions or whatever task he is assigned to. In this way, he also makes for a capable leader, though he will also work with others.
Even though Kid is basically a god, he doesn't look down on anyone (unless they're ridiculously stupid and asymmetrical). In fact, he treats everyone, especially his friends, as equals. Actually, more than equals. He is always striving to reach their level, so he actually sees himself at a state below them. Being a shinigami or a human doesn't matter much to him; it's the person's individuality that matters. He will recognize those who have valuable abilities, even if that someone would otherwise drive him up the wall because of his outrageous personality (re: BlackਮStar). This is also shown by his admiration for the Thompson sisters. While it's true that he chooses them because they become twin pistols and keep his symmetry, he also admires them because they have a more positive personality in comparison to his negative one.
Violent temper. This is both rare and common, depending on how you look at it. In general, Kid is a level-headed young man. But there are times when that all cracks. This usually only happens when he sees something so horrendously asymmetrical, but if there is something he is absolutely against, he will also grow angry. Once Kid gets mad, he gets mad.
Just a boy. Despite everything, in the end Kid is also, well, a kid. He's still a teenager and knows how to have fun with his friends. Though he's not like Soul or BlackਮStar who just let loose and can go wild, Kid will join in on casual fun engagements and knows how to just chill and hang out. Despite being usually serious and reserved, there are moments when he can relax and enjoy the small things in life. Of course he is at his happiest when something is perfectly symmetrical, and his usual reserved demeanor is thrown out the window. He also treasures his friends very much, and will do whatever it takes to protect them.
Due to the events at Soul Campaign. Kid has always respected and looked up to his father. Shinigami's death would have definitely shaken him up and stunned him. The loss would have been great, and it would have taken him a little time to accept the fact. However, although he would always mourn over his father's death and never consider himself at the same level, he would also know that he had a role to fill—that of the world's new Shinigami. It would be a lot of pressure, sure, but he couldn't just run from it or try to pass it off to someone else. He would never even consider it. He knew it would happen one day, it just happened a lot sooner than anyone expected or wanted.
From here on, Kid will have to shoulder all the responsibilities. The young shinigami had always been mature for someone of his age, but now his maturity will be tested to the limits. Thrust head first into the world of adulthood, he will have to focus all his efforts on combating against the witches, run Shibusen, dealing with the BREW mishap—the days when he could just be a student and fight on the front lines with his friends are over. Now he is the one having to give out the missions and direct his subordinates into battle. Though he can still fight and continues to train, it would still be too risky for him to actually go out and fight alongside his friends—where he really would want to be. And though he would never object to them, the days of relaxation and just "hanging out" were over as long the war waged on.
There will be times where he would long for the old days, but he also had to fight for their present and future. To regain the perfect world that his father strove for. They were large shoes to fill, but only he could do it—and he will. Even though he is still a young teenager, and while he will always still have his childish tendencies until he grew older, Kid will also continue to mature and learn everything that he would need to know. He also knows he has the support of not only his close friends, but also the whole of Shibusen. If there are any doubters, he will just have to prove them wrong. He will have his own doubts, his insecurities, but he will also be filled with the determination to succeed.
He had lost his father and countless others because of this war. He would not lose another close loved one if he could help it.
Failure is simply not an option.
[ ABILITIES ]
Kid has quite a few abilities, with or without Liz and Patty as his weapons. The wiki link (specifically here) does a good job at explaining all his specific abilities, so I'll just touch on the more general ones and just repeat the more important ones.
As a shinigami, Kid's own body is different from a normal human's body. He can handle extreme weather conditions as well as poisons and chemicals. This is much to his dismay since he's tried dying those three white stripes in his hair to no avail. Kid also has inherent abilities that come with being a shinigami, but what those are exactly are unknown. Kid also has a higher tolerance and endurance for any physical abuse, and has higher capabilities than normal humans.
Those three white lines on the left side of his hair aren't just for show. They are called the Lines of Sanzu and basically act a kind of power limiter as well as symbolize that Kid is still a child shinigami. Whenever the lines connect, Kid is able to use more powerful sets of attacks.
[Note: During the battle with Asura, he was able to connect all three lines. However he still has the lines even afterward. Since this is not explained (and since the manga hasn't even had Kid connect three of them yetyay diverging storylines), I can only headcanon that either it was not "official" or there's more to it than however he did it the first time. Like an "Ah, you got it once, but you have yet to fully master it, padawan" sort of thing. That's what I'm running with and hopefully it won't actually be addressed in-game. I'm leaving this open to be retconned whenever more accurate information is gathered from the manga, but again, I'm dealing with anime-verse so....sob.]
In terms of his skill, other than being quite athletic and strong, Kid is also known for his proficiency as a Meister. Liz and Patty Thompson are his partners as Weapons, and they both change into identical twin guns that Kid wields simultaneously. Even though he fires them upside down and with his pinkies, he is highly skilled and is an excellent shot. It should be noted that when uses Liz and Patty, he doesn't fire normal bullets but his soul wavelength instead. He can also execute a Soul Resonance with both weapons without any difficulty and can perform higher levels of attacks.
Without his weapons, Kid is also a highly capable hand-to-hand fighter. Even though he would be a long range fighter, Kid can also fight in a short range scenario. He will even use his weapons to attack. Ever wonder why he holds those guns upside down? It's not explicitly stated, but it could be surmised that this allows him to better grip and wield them similar to tonfas when in close-ranged combat.
One other ability he has is his Soul Perception. Although Maka's ability is superior to his, Kid's ability is also superior to most others. With this ability, he can sense and see the souls of others and judge the person's personality and characteristics.
And finally, there's his skateboard, Beelzebub. He can "summon" (it's more like materializing) the skateboard through his hand and use it to fly long or short distances. He's also a rather good skateboarder, able to perform tricks even with a person on his shoulders.
[ ADDITIONAL NOTES ]
- Kid's age: So none of the characters were ever given ages, but it's always been assumed they were in the 14-15 range. I've always played Kid as 15. SC is set a year AFTER the end of the anime. With only SC's actual start date as a starting point, the timeline is thus: June 2008 (end of anime) --> June 2009 (SC start) --> March 2010 (at time of writing this). I just gave Kid an arbitrary birthday of August 26 because he fits the Virgo Zodiac sign and it actually works numerically (8 | 2+6=8 | 88). So assuming he was 15 during the main events of the anime, in August 2008 he would have turned 16, August 2009 would be 17, and in 2010 he'll be 18. Of course it's a fudge line between 16 and 17, but I opted for going older. At any case, if Ohkubo EVER gives canon character ages and birthdays even for a starting point, I'll retcon this. But for now, that's my solution for whenever someone asks him how old he is. It doesn't come up often and I had hoped to never really address this but...there has been one actual time so. Sob. I apologize for having to headcanon this, but now you have my reasoning.
Just a few notes about what he does in-game:
- Part of the "Welcome to Shibusen" crew for the newcomers
- Every morning Kid helps with the Morning Training Sessions: Meister Ability
- Maintains the barrier that prevents the Madness from entering Death City
- Cannot leave the city due to said barrier
- Cannot do as many missions due to said situation; therefore it's going to take forever for Liz and Patti to turn to Deathscythes unless he lets them go to train with someone else ;;
- As of 6/08/2012 (Feb 25 in-game), Liz and Patti have 95 kishin eggs each (a number somewhat arbitrarily chosen. At the start of the anime they had 71/72, so it is highly likely that they would have gotten more by this point and it is the number decided between me and the players who play the sisters (Cybra and Cura))
- More than likely wears the Shinigami costume when performing official duties with the mask reserved for even more official situations outside of Death City
